Invest the maximum Rs 1.5 lakh in your Public Provident Fund every April for 15 years. At the current 7.1% rate, the account could mature at about Rs 40.68 lakh. You would have deposited Rs 22.5 lakh. The remaining Rs 18.18 lakh is tax-free interest.
This PPF calculator projects that maturity value for any yearly deposit. Enter your annual contribution, the interest rate and the number of years. It shows total investment, interest earned and the final balance, assuming the rate stays constant.
Rates for small savings schemes change from time to time. Check the latest notified rate before relying on any projection.
PPF interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month. It is credited once a year, on 31 March. Money deposited after the 5th misses that month's interest entirely.
The effect adds up over 15 years. Compare two savers who each put in Rs 1.5 lakh a year at 7.1%.
| Deposit timing | Maturity after 15 years |
|---|---|
| By 5 April every year | About Rs 40.68 lakh |
| In March, at the end of each year | About Rs 37.99 lakh |
Same money, same rate, yet the early depositor ends up roughly Rs 2.7 lakh richer. If a lump sum is not possible, deposit monthly before the 5th.
At maturity, you do not have to close the account. You can extend it in blocks of five years, as many times as you like.
Submit Form 4 within a year of maturity to keep depositing. Say you keep investing Rs 1.5 lakh a year for 25 years in total. At 7.1%, the balance could cross Rs 1.03 crore. One withdrawal a year is allowed, up to 60% of the balance at the start of the block.
If you do nothing, the account extends automatically without fresh deposits. The balance keeps earning interest, and you can withdraw any amount once a year.
Try 20, 25 and 30-year horizons to see what extra time adds. Treat long projections loosely, because the rate will almost certainly change along the way.

The PPF rate is 7.1% a year, compounded annually, and it has held at this level for several quarters. The finance ministry reviews small savings rates every quarter. Always confirm the latest notified rate before planning long-term contributions.
At 7.1%, depositing Rs 1.5 lakh before 5 April each year gives roughly Rs 40.68 lakh at maturity. Your total investment is Rs 22.5 lakh. The interest of about Rs 18.18 lakh is completely tax-free.
Partial withdrawal is allowed once a year from the seventh financial year onwards, within set limits. Premature closure is permitted after five years only for specific reasons. These include serious illness, higher education or a change in residency status.
For long horizons, PPF often wins for taxpayers because its interest is tax-free. FD interest is taxed at your slab rate. PPF has a 15-year lock-in, though. FDs offer far more flexibility for shorter goals or emergency funds.
No, the Section 80C deduction for PPF deposits is available only under the old tax regime. The interest and maturity amount remain tax-free under both regimes. So PPF still works well as a safe, tax-free saving option.
Deposit by the 5th of the month to earn interest for that month. For a full year of interest on a lump sum, deposit by 5 April. A deposit made on the 6th misses that month's interest completely.
NRIs cannot open a new PPF account. If you opened one while resident, you can generally continue it until maturity on a non-repatriation basis. Extension after maturity has restrictions for NRIs, so confirm the current rules with your bank.
