A shirt tagged at Rs 2,499 with 20% off costs Rs 1,999.20. Your saving is Rs 499.80. This discount calculator gives both numbers from the original price and the discount rate. It also works backwards when you only know what you paid.
Sale price = Original price x (1 - discount% / 100)
The saving is simply the original price minus the sale price. On round figures you can often do it mentally. On prices like Rs 2,499 or Rs 1,349, a quick check avoids errors at the billing counter.
Multiply the original price by the percentage you still pay. At 20% off you pay 80%, so Rs 2,499 x 0.8 = Rs 1,999.20.
Subtract the sale price from the original, then divide by the original. A Rs 1,500 item selling at Rs 1,125 has a cut of Rs 375. Divided by 1,500, that is a 25% discount.
Divide the sale price by the percentage you paid. If you paid Rs 1,350 after 25% off, the original was 1,350 / 0.75. That comes to Rs 1,800.
Stacked discounts apply one after the other, not together. The second discount works on a price that has already been reduced. On a Rs 2,499 item, 20% off and then a further 10% off leaves Rs 1,799.28.
| Offer | Final price | Effective discount |
|---|---|---|
| Flat 30% off | Rs 1,749.30 | 30% |
| 20% off, then extra 10% | Rs 1,799.28 | 28% |
| 10% off, then extra 20% | Rs 1,799.28 | 28% |
The order of the two discounts makes no difference to the final price. A flat 30% still saves you Rs 49.98 more. Keep this in mind when a banner promises an "extra 10% off".
Shop owners use the ToolsMate discount calculator as well. It helps them set a festive offer that still protects their margin.
An item costs a shop Rs 600 and carries an MRP of Rs 1,000. A 25% discount brings the price to Rs 750, leaving Rs 150 profit. That is a 20% margin on the selling price, or 25% on cost. Run the numbers before announcing a sale, not after.

Multiply the price by 0.15 to find the saving, then subtract it from the price. On Rs 3,200, the discount is Rs 480 and you pay Rs 2,720. You can also multiply directly by 0.85 for the final price.
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide the result by the original price and multiply by 100. A drop from Rs 800 to Rs 600 is a Rs 200 cut, which works out to a 25% discount.
Divide the price you paid by one minus the discount rate. If you paid Rs 1,700 after 15% off, divide 1,700 by 0.85. The original price was Rs 2,000 before the offer was applied.
In India, GST applies to the transaction value after any discount shown on the invoice. For retail products, MRP already includes GST, so the discounted shelf price is what you pay. Business invoices may list tax separately.
The second discount applies to the already reduced price, not the original. Discounts of 20% and 10% together give a combined discount of 28%, not 30%. Work it out as 1 - (0.8 x 0.9) to get the effective rate.
A discount is a price reduction offered to the customer, often temporary or tied to conditions. A markdown is a permanent cut to the listed price, usually to clear slow-moving stock. Both lower your price, but markdowns rarely reverse.
Work out the percentage saving, then compare it with the cap. On a Rs 15,000 order with 10% off up to Rs 1,000, you save Rs 1,000, not Rs 1,500. Your effective discount drops to about 6.7%.
