Add or subtract hours and minutes, find the time between two clock times, total weekly timesheets and convert results to decimal hours for payroll or billing.

Time results are estimates for planning and should be checked against current official rules or professional advice where applicable.
Time does not add like ordinary numbers. Sixty minutes make an hour, so 1:45 plus 0:30 is 2:15, not 1:75. This time calculator handles the carry-over for you. Use it to add durations, find the gap between two clock times or total a week of working hours.
That shift spans 8 hours 35 minutes. After the break, the time worked is 7 hours 50 minutes.
Payroll and billing software often wants decimal hours rather than hours and minutes. Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. So 7 hours 50 minutes becomes 7.83 hours.
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 15 | 0.25 |
| 20 | 0.33 |
| 30 | 0.50 |
| 45 | 0.75 |
| 50 | 0.83 |
A frequent error is writing 7:50 as 7.50 hours. That undercounts the shift by 20 minutes. At Rs 500 an hour, it costs about Rs 167 in lost pay for every shift.
To convert back, multiply the decimal part by 60. So 6.4 hours is 6 hours 24 minutes. Many employers also round punches to the nearest quarter hour, so check your payroll policy before comparing totals.
Night shifts break simple subtraction. From 22:00 to 06:30 looks negative if you subtract directly. Add 24 hours to the end time first, then subtract. The result is 8 hours 30 minutes.
| Day | Hours worked |
|---|---|
| Monday | 7:50 |
| Tuesday | 8:15 |
| Wednesday | 7:40 |
| Thursday | 8:05 |
| Friday | 6:30 |
| Total | 38:20 |
Adding these by hand means carrying minutes into hours several times. The total is 38 hours 20 minutes, or 38.33 hours in decimal for an invoice.
The tool works with durations and clock times, not time zones. If a start time is in London and the end time is in Dubai, convert both to one zone first. ToolsMate keeps the arithmetic right, but the inputs need to share the same reference.
Say a project budget allows 40 hours and the team has logged 27 hours 35 minutes. Borrow an hour as 60 minutes to subtract cleanly: 39:60 minus 27:35 gives 12:25. So 12 hours 25 minutes remain, or 12.42 hours in decimal. The same borrowing works for minutes and seconds in video timelines.

Hours and minutes are converted to total minutes and wrapped at 24 hours. This describes the core logic used by the tool. Check any assumptions that may affect your result.
Use accurate inputs and keep units consistent.

Subtract the start time from the end time, then deduct any unpaid breaks. From 08:30 to 17:00 is 8 hours 30 minutes. Taking off a 30-minute lunch leaves exactly 8 hours of paid work for that day.
Divide the minutes by 60. So 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 40 minutes is 0.67 hours and 50 minutes is 0.83 hours. Add the result to the whole hours, which turns 6 hours 40 minutes into 6.67 hours.
Keep counting hours past 24 rather than rolling into a new day. A weekly timesheet might total 41:15, meaning 41 hours and 15 minutes. In spreadsheets, apply a custom [h]:mm format so the total displays correctly.
Add 24 hours to the end time whenever it is earlier than the start time. A shift from 21:00 to 05:00 then becomes 21:00 to 29:00. Subtracting the two gives 8 hours worked across midnight.
It is 1 hour 30 minutes. Multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes, so 0.5 x 60 = 30. In the same way, 2.75 hours equals 2 hours 45 minutes and 0.2 hours equals 12 minutes.
There are 200 minutes. Multiply the hours by 60 and add the remaining minutes, so 3 x 60 + 20 = 200. Converting everything to minutes first makes subtracting awkward times much easier to do by hand.
Yes, though converting to 24-hour format first avoids slips. 2:15 PM becomes 14:15, so 14:15 minus 9:40 gives 4 hours 35 minutes. Mixing up AM and PM is the commonest source of wrong answers.
