Pull out pages 1-3, 7 and 10-12, or split a long PDF into separate files. Learn page range syntax and why printed page numbers often don't match the PDF.
A PDF splitter takes one document and gives you only the pages you want. You might extract a single chapter or pull one month from a yearly statement. You might also break a scanned bundle into separate files. The fastest way to control this is page range syntax. Once you know it, splitting any PDF takes seconds.
Typical jobs include sending one invoice from a monthly batch or sharing a single chapter with a study group. Another is uploading just the signed page of an agreement. In each case, the person receiving the file sees only what they need.
Most splitters, and most print dialogs, follow the same pattern. Commas separate items, and a hyphen marks a continuous run of pages.
| You type | Pages you get |
|---|---|
5 | Page 5 only |
1-3 | Pages 1, 2 and 3 |
1-3, 7 | Pages 1, 2, 3 and 7 |
1-3, 7, 10-12 | Pages 1, 2, 3, 7, 10, 11 and 12 |
15-20, 2 | Pages 15 to 20 plus page 2, with order depending on the tool |
Spaces after commas are generally ignored. If a range runs past the last page, a tool may stop at the end or show an error. When order matters, list ranges in the sequence you want and preview the output.
Suppose a company annual report runs to 120 pages. You need three sections as separate files for a client presentation.
9-28, giving 20 pages.61-66, giving 6 pages.67-112, giving 46 pages. The number printed at the foot of a page is not always its PDF page number. Covers, contents pages and Roman-numbered introductions push everything forward. Page "1" of the report might be PDF page 9. Use the counter in your viewer, not the printed footer, when typing ranges into ToolsMate or any other tool.
Check which of these modes the PDF splitter offers before you start. Splitting only copies pages, so quality stays the same and the original is not changed. Keep that original until you have checked every output against it.

Each PDF page is copied into a separate output document. This describes the core logic used by the tool. Check any assumptions that may affect your result.

Type the pages you want as a range, such as 2-4, 9, and run the split. The output contains only those pages. Use the page counter in your PDF viewer to find numbers, because printed footer numbers often differ from actual positions.
It means pages one to three, page seven and pages ten to twelve, which is seven pages in total. Commas separate items and hyphens mark a continuous run. Most PDF tools and print dialogs accept this same format.
No, splitting copies pages exactly without recompressing text or images. The extracted pages look identical to the original. File size usually drops in proportion to the pages removed. Shared fonts can make small extracts slightly heavier than expected.
Choose the option that saves every page as its own file, if the splitter offers it. A 20-page PDF would then give you 20 separate files, often bundled in a ZIP. This suits scanned certificates, receipts and single-page forms.
You probably used the printed page number instead of the PDF's actual page position. Covers, contents and Roman-numbered pages shift the count. Check the page counter in your viewer, then adjust the range and split again.
Some tools can, but splitting into fixed page chunks works almost as well. Estimate the size per page by dividing the total size by the page count. Then pick a chunk length that keeps each part below the upload limit.
Only after opening it with the correct password, since the content is encrypted. Save an unprotected copy, split it, and protect the outputs again if they contain personal data. Files restricted against copying may also need the owner password.
