How long should a strong password be?

For most accounts, aim for at least 12 characters. Use 16 or more for email, banking and your password manager. Length adds far more strength than swapping an "a" for "@". A random password generator removes the human habit of picking names, dates and keyboard patterns.

Set the length, choose which character sets to include, and generate. Copy the result straight into your password manager rather than a notes app or spreadsheet.

Password strength measured in bits

Strength is measured as entropy, in bits. For a random password, entropy equals length multiplied by log2 of the number of possible characters. Every extra bit doubles the number of guesses an attacker needs.

Password typeCharacter poolApprox. entropy
8 characters, all printable symbols9452 bits
12 characters, letters and digits6271 bits
12 characters, all printable symbols9479 bits
16 characters, lowercase only2675 bits
16 characters, all printable symbols94105 bits
6-word random passphrase7,776-word list78 bits

A 16-character lowercase password beats a 12-character one with letters and digits. Length wins. These numbers only hold when the characters are picked at random, not chosen by a person.

Habits that undo a strong password

  • Reusing it. One leaked site lets attackers try the same login everywhere. This is called credential stuffing.
  • Making small tweaks. Changing "Summer2025!" to "Summer2026!" is predictable.
  • Storing it in plain text. Emailed passwords and screenshots are easy to find.
  • Skipping two-factor authentication. A strong password plus an authenticator app is far safer than either alone.

Some sites still cap length or ban certain symbols. If a site rejects the output, remove the symbol set and increase the length to compensate.

Matching the password to the account

  • Password manager master key: a random 5-6 word passphrase you can remember.
  • Email and banking: 16 or more random characters, saved in the manager, plus two-factor login.
  • Home Wi-Fi: 16 or more characters without look-alike symbols, since guests type it on phones.
  • Low-value forums and shopping sites: still random and unique, at 12 characters or more.

What to look for in a password generator

A trustworthy tool should use a cryptographically secure random source, such as the Web Crypto API. Check that it does not send generated passwords to a server. You can often confirm this by watching the network tab in your browser's developer tools.

Useful options include excluding look-alike characters such as 0, O, l and 1. That helps when you must type a password on a TV or read it aloud. Use the ToolsMate password generator for quick strong passwords. A password manager remains the best place to keep them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 12-character password strong enough?+

A random 12-character password using letters, digits and symbols has about 79 bits of entropy, which resists online guessing well. For email, banking and your password manager, choose 16 or more characters for a wider safety margin.

Are passphrases better than random passwords?+

A passphrase of five or six randomly chosen words can match a strong random password and is easier to type. The words must be picked randomly from a large list, not formed into a sentence or a famous quote.

Is it safe to use an online password generator?+

It can be, if the generator creates passwords locally with a secure random function and never transmits them. Check the site uses HTTPS and avoid generators that show ads in the output area. Store results in a password manager.

How often should I change my passwords?+

Current NIST guidance says forced periodic changes are unnecessary for strong, unique passwords. Change a password at once if a service reports a breach or you notice suspicious logins. Also change it if someone who no longer needs it knows it.

Do special characters make a password stronger?+

They help by enlarging the pool of possible characters, but less than people expect. Adding four extra lowercase letters usually adds more strength than switching on symbols. So prioritise length when a site limits which symbols you can use.

What makes a password easy to crack?+

Dictionary words, names, birth dates, keyboard runs such as qwerty, and predictable substitutions like @ for a. Attackers test these patterns first. Even a long password falls quickly if a person chose it instead of a random generator.

Why do some websites reject my generated password?+

Some sites set a maximum length or allow only certain symbols, often due to old systems. Try removing symbols or the specific character mentioned in the error. Then increase the length to keep the overall strength high.
