Where your EPF contribution goes

Twelve percent of your basic pay leaves your salary for EPF every month, and your employer adds another 12%. Yet not all of the employer's share reaches your provident fund. This EPF calculator separates the pension and provident fund portions. It then projects your balance at retirement.

Quick glossary

  • EPF: the Employees' Provident Fund, a savings account managed by EPFO.
  • EPS: the Employees' Pension Scheme, funded only by part of the employer's share.
  • Wage ceiling: Rs 15,000 a month, the cap used for the EPS contribution.
  • UAN: your Universal Account Number, which stays the same across jobs.
  • VPF: Voluntary Provident Fund, for contributing more than the mandatory 12%.

EPF contribution split on a Rs 30,000 basic

Take a basic plus DA of Rs 30,000 a month. You contribute 12%, which is Rs 3,600. Your employer also pays Rs 3,600, but 8.33% of the Rs 15,000 wage ceiling goes to EPS. That is Rs 1,250, leaving Rs 2,350 for your EPF account.

ComponentMonthly amount
Your share (12% of basic + DA)Rs 3,600
Employer share to EPFRs 2,350
Employer share to EPSRs 1,250
Total credited to EPFRs 5,950

Some employers contribute 12% on your full basic. Others restrict both shares to the Rs 15,000 ceiling. Check your payslip before projecting, because this choice changes the final balance a lot.

How EPF interest is calculated

EPFO declares the interest rate every year, and it was 8.25% for FY 2024-25. Interest is worked out monthly on the running balance but credited once a year.

Monthly interest = month-end balance x (annual rate / 12)

With Rs 5,950 a month from a zero balance, you deposit Rs 71,400 in year one. Interest at 8.25% comes to about Rs 3,191, so the year-end balance is roughly Rs 74,591. From year two, that interest starts earning interest too.

Long-term projection

Now assume the same Rs 30,000 basic rises 5% a year and the rate holds at 8.25%. The EPS share stays fixed at Rs 1,250.

AfterApproximate EPF balance
10 yearsRs 13.8 lakh
20 yearsRs 54.5 lakh
30 yearsRs 1.61 crore

EPF withdrawal and tax: what to check

  • Withdrawals are tax-free after five years of continuous service, including earlier jobs if you transferred the balance.
  • Withdrawing before five years can attract TDS if the amount exceeds Rs 50,000.
  • Interest on your own contributions above Rs 2.5 lakh a year is taxable. The limit is Rs 5 lakh if your employer contributes nothing.
  • Partial withdrawals are allowed for housing, illness, education and marriage, within EPFO conditions.

EPFO has been simplifying its withdrawal categories, and the rate is declared afresh each year. Revisit your EPF calculator projection whenever a new rate is announced. On ToolsMate you can change the rate and salary growth in seconds and see the impact straight away.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current EPF interest rate?+

EPFO set the rate at 8.25% for FY 2024-25, matching the previous year. The Central Board of Trustees recommends the rate and the Finance Ministry approves it. Check the EPFO website for the most recently declared figure.

Why is my employer's EPF contribution less than mine?+

Because 8.33% of the employer's share goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme. With the Rs 15,000 wage ceiling, that diversion is up to Rs 1,250 a month. Only the remaining amount reaches your EPF account and earns interest.

Is EPF interest taxable?+

Interest is tax-free on your own contributions up to Rs 2.5 lakh a year. If your employer makes no contribution, the limit rises to Rs 5 lakh. Interest on contributions above the limit is taxed every year at your slab rate.

Can I contribute more than 12% to EPF?+

Yes, through the Voluntary Provident Fund. You can put in up to 100% of basic plus DA, and it earns the same rate as EPF. Your employer is not required to match anything above the statutory 12% contribution.

Does EPF earn interest after I leave my job?+

Yes, interest generally continues on a non-contributory account until you turn 58. Interest earned while you are not employed is taxable, though. Transferring the balance to your new employer's account through your UAN keeps things cleaner.

How is EPF different from PPF?+

EPF is tied to salaried jobs and funded by you and your employer. PPF is open to any resident, has a 15-year lock-in and currently pays 7.1%. EPF usually pays more, but you cannot join it independently.

Can I withdraw my full EPF balance if I am unemployed?+

Generally yes, after a waiting period without employment. A partial withdrawal is allowed sooner, and a full settlement after a longer gap. EPFO revised these waiting periods in 2025, so confirm the current timeline on the EPFO portal before applying.
